Eight decades ago, an oilman named George Blaisdell noticed a friend who tried- and failed- to light a cigarette during a windy day in rural northwest Pennsylvania. The futile attempt evoked an idea in Blaisdell’s mind: he would create a windproof lighter.
This is how the historic company Zippo Manufacturing Co. came to be.
Zippo lighters, which have gained popularity as “windproof lighters”, can remain lit in harsh weather conditions, due to the design of the windshield and the appropriate speed of fuel delivery. The consequence of this unique mechanism is that it is difficult to extinguish a Zippo by blowing a flame.
In a world where most products are intended for single-use or are available with limited warranties, the Zippo pocket lighter continues to support its well-known lifetime warranty. In more than 85 years, not a single coin has been spent on the mechanical repair of the Zippo pocket lighter, regardless of the age or condition of the lighter.
The Zippo pocket lighter is rooted in American culture and is a global icon of durability and reliability.
